In short: The ICP-ACC certification has no formal prerequisites. Anyone can enrol, regardless of prior certification or job title. It suits Scrum Masters, agile coaches, team leads, managers, and consultants who guide teams through change. Bring real team scenarios, an openness to practise coaching skills live, and a few days of focused attention. The ICAgile credential is lifetime, with no renewal fee.

Does ICP-ACC have any prerequisites?

No. The ICP-ACC certification, the ICAgile Certified Professional in Agile Coaching, has no formal prerequisites. You do not need a prior certification, a minimum number of years in agile, or a specific job title to enrol. ICAgile designed the agile coaching track to be accessible to anyone stepping into a coaching stance, whether you are early in your journey or already coaching teams every day.

That said, eligibility and readiness are two different things. You are eligible the moment you register. You will get far more from the class if you arrive with some lived experience of working in or alongside a team, because the learning leans heavily on practising coaching, facilitation, and mentoring skills against situations you actually recognise.

Who ICP-ACC suits

ICP-ACC is built for people who help teams grow, not just people who run ceremonies. It suits a wide range of roles, and most cohorts at our public academy mix several of them.

ICP-ACC is the foundational credential in the agile coach certification path. If your remit reaches across multiple teams, departments, or a whole organisation, you may later progress toward enterprise agile coaching through credentials such as ICP-ENT and ICP-CAT. ICP-ACC is the right starting point first.

What to bring to an ICP-ACC class

Because the learning is experiential, what you bring shapes how much you take away. Come prepared with the following.

How ICP-ACC fits the wider ICAgile path

ICP-ACC is one credential within a broader ICAgile certification framework. Many practitioners pair it with facilitation skills via ICP-ATF (agile team facilitation), since coaching and facilitation are complementary. Others extend into product through ICP-APO, foundations through ICP-FAI, or enterprise coaching through ICP-ENT. As the discipline evolves, our AI for agile coaches resources and our AI native agile thinking show where modern coaching is heading.

A practical note on renewal and cost of ownership

One reason ICP-ACC appeals to coaches is its credential model. ICAgile certifications are lifetime, with no renewal fee. You earn the certification once and it stays valid. This contrasts with some other ecosystems. Scrum Alliance certifications renew roughly every two years and require Scrum Education Units plus a fee. SAFe certifications renew annually with a fee. By comparison, both Scrum.org PSM and PSPO credentials and ICAgile certifications are lifetime. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Scrum Master certification before ICP-ACC?

No. ICP-ACC has no formal prerequisites, so a Scrum Master certification is not required to enrol. Many learners do come from a Scrum Master background, because coaching is a natural next step, but it is entirely optional. You can register for ICP-ACC directly, regardless of your current certifications or job title.

How much agile experience do I need for ICP-ACC?

There is no minimum experience requirement. That said, some exposure to working in or alongside a team helps, since the class is experiential and uses real scenarios. Even with limited experience you can take the certification. Just arrive ready to practise coaching skills, reflect honestly, and draw on whatever team situations you have encountered so far.

Is there an exam for ICP-ACC?

No, ICP-ACC has no exam. ICAgile certifications are earned through experiential learning and instructor assessment rather than a test. You demonstrate understanding by participating, practising coaching and facilitation live, and engaging with peers. This makes readiness less about study and more about turning up willing to practise and reflect throughout the class.

Does the ICP-ACC certification expire?

No. ICAgile certifications, including ICP-ACC, are lifetime credentials with no renewal fee. You earn it once and it stays valid. This differs from some other certifications. Scrum Alliance renews roughly every two years with units and a fee, and SAFe renews annually with a fee, while Scrum.org PSM and PSPO and ICAgile remain lifetime.

Who should not take ICP-ACC yet?

ICP-ACC is open to everyone, but if your role spans many teams or a whole organisation, you may want to pair it with enterprise focused tracks later. ICP-ACC is still the right foundation first. If you only want process facilitation rather than people coaching, ICP-ATF agile team facilitation may suit your immediate need better as a starting point.

What should I bring to the ICP-ACC class?

Bring real team scenarios you are navigating, an open coaching mindset, and a willingness to practise live through role plays and peer coaching. Honest self reflection matters, since coaching begins with self awareness. Block out the days properly and avoid multitasking. The more genuine situations and openness you bring, the more value you take from the certification.
