In short: PSM proves you understand Scrum and can run it as a Scrum Master. ICP-ACC proves you can coach people and teams as an Agile Coach, which is a broader human skill set. PSM (Scrum.org) and ICP-ACC (ICAgile) are both lifetime with no renewal fee. Choose PSM for framework depth, ICP-ACC for coaching range.

What each certification actually proves

PSM and ICP-ACC are often compared, but they answer different questions. PSM, the Professional Scrum Master credential from Scrum.org, tests how well you understand the Scrum framework and the accountabilities of a Scrum Master. It is assessment based, so you sit an online exam against the Scrum Guide. ICP-ACC, the ICAgile Certified Professional in Agile Coaching, is earned by completing an instructor led course and focuses on the coaching stance, facilitation, mentoring and the difference between teaching a team and genuinely coaching it.

Put simply, PSM goes deep on one framework. ICP-ACC goes broad on the human skills an Agile Coach needs across any framework. Neither is better in the abstract. They suit different roles and different stages of a career.

Scrum mastery versus coaching mastery

A strong Scrum Master keeps a team true to Scrum, removes impediments and protects the rhythm of delivery. A strong Agile Coach works one level up and one level wider. They coach individuals, grow other Scrum Masters, facilitate difficult conversations and help leaders change how they work. ICP-ACC is built around that coaching capability, including professional coaching skills, mentoring and the self awareness to know which mode to use in the moment.

Lifetime validity, a fair point on renewals

Both of these credentials are lifetime. You pass once and you hold it for good, with no recurring fee. That is worth stating plainly because not every certification works this way. To be fair to the wider market, Scrum Alliance certifications such as CSM renew roughly every two years and require Scrum Education Units plus a renewal fee. SAFe certifications renew annually with a fee. Scrum.org PSM and ICAgile credentials, including ICP-ACC, do not carry that ongoing cost. If lifetime validity matters to you, both PSM and ICP-ACC score well, and so do the other ICAgile certifications in the ICAgile pathway.

Who each certification suits

Choose PSM if

Choose ICP-ACC if

Many practitioners hold both over time. A common path is to earn a Scrum Master credential early, gain delivery experience, then take ICP-ACC as the foundation of a coaching career. From there the ICAgile track continues through facilitation, mentoring and team coaching, then into enterprise work.

Where ICP-ACC sits in a coaching pathway

ICP-ACC is usually the entry point of the agile coaching journey, not the end of it. After it, learners often progress through team facilitation (ICP-ATF), then toward enterprise and leadership focused tracks such as enterprise coaching (ICP-ENT), agility in the enterprise and product ownership depth via ICP-APO. PSM does not map onto this coaching ladder, because it is a framework credential rather than a coaching one. That is the cleanest way to understand the two. PSM certifies framework competence, ICP-ACC opens a coaching capability path.

Frequently asked questions

Is PSM or ICP-ACC better?

Neither is better in general, because they prove different things. PSM proves you understand and can run the Scrum framework as a Scrum Master. ICP-ACC proves you can coach people and teams across frameworks. Pick PSM for framework depth on a delivery team, and ICP-ACC if you want to grow into a broader Agile Coach role with facilitation and mentoring skills.

Are PSM and ICP-ACC both lifetime certifications?

Yes. Scrum.org PSM and ICAgile ICP-ACC are both lifetime credentials with no renewal fee. You earn each one once and keep it. For comparison, Scrum Alliance certifications renew roughly every two years with units and a fee, and SAFe certifications renew annually with a fee, so PSM and ICP-ACC are friendlier on long term cost.

Does ICP-ACC have prerequisites?

No. ICP-ACC has no formal prerequisites, so you can take it without holding a prior agile certification. That said, the course assumes you have some practical exposure to agile teams, because the coaching skills land better when you can relate them to real situations. PSM also has no formal prerequisite, since it is an open assessment against the Scrum Guide.

Can I hold both PSM and ICP-ACC?

Yes, and many practitioners do. A common path is to earn a Scrum Master credential first, build delivery experience, then take ICP-ACC as the foundation of a coaching career. The two complement each other well. PSM gives you precise framework command, while ICP-ACC gives you the coaching, facilitation and mentoring skills that work across any framework you encounter.

How is ICP-ACC assessed compared with PSM?

ICP-ACC is earned through an instructor led course with active participation, practice and feedback rather than a pass or fail exam. PSM is earned by passing an online assessment against the Scrum Guide, which you can prepare for through self study or an optional course. So one rewards facilitated practice, the other rewards demonstrated knowledge under exam conditions.

Which certification helps me become an Agile Coach?

ICP-ACC is the more direct route, because it is the entry point of the ICAgile agile coaching pathway and centres on the coaching stance, facilitation and mentoring. From there you can progress into team facilitation and enterprise coaching tracks. PSM remains valuable as evidence of framework depth, but it does not by itself map onto the coaching career ladder.
