Credential comparison
ICP-LPM vs SAFe LPM
Both certify lean portfolio management. SAFe LPM certifies it as practised inside the Scaled Agile Framework, with SAFe’s events, roles and vocabulary. ICP-LPM certifies the discipline itself: funding models, prioritisation economics and portfolio governance that work whether or not your organisation runs SAFe.
Side by side
| ICP-LPM (ICAgile) | SAFe LPM (Scaled Agile) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it certifies | Lean portfolio management as a discipline: strategy, funding, prioritisation, governance | Lean portfolio management as defined within the SAFe framework |
| Framework scope | Framework-neutral, applies in SAFe, Spotify-style, or home-grown operating models | SAFe specifically |
| How it is earned | Accredited live course, competency-assessed in class, no exam | Course plus a timed online exam |
| Validity | Lifetime, no renewal fees | Annual renewal fee to keep the certification current |
| Best fit | Portfolio leaders who need the economics and governance, whatever the operating model | Organisations formally rolling out SAFe who need aligned terminology |
Our take
Inside a committed SAFe transformation, SAFe LPM keeps everyone speaking the same language and is the natural choice. Everywhere else, ICP-LPM certifies the same discipline without binding it to one framework, without an exam, and without an annual renewal bill.
Does ICP-LPM cover the same ground as SAFe LPM?
The core discipline is the same: lean budgets and funding models, portfolio prioritisation, governance and flow. ICP-LPM teaches it framework-neutrally; SAFe LPM teaches it in SAFe’s specific constructs.
Does ICP-LPM expire?
No. It is a lifetime ICAgile credential with no renewal fee. SAFe certifications renew annually with a fee.
Which should a PMO lead take?
If your organisation runs SAFe, take SAFe LPM for alignment. If it runs anything else, or is still deciding, ICP-LPM gives you the discipline without the framework lock-in.
