ICP-ACC vs CSM
CSM certifies that you understand the Scrum framework. ICP-ACC certifies that you can coach people and teams, whatever framework they run. They are not competitors so much as different altitudes: many agile coaches hold both, and most started with CSM before finding its ceiling.

Our take
If you are choosing a first certification for a Scrum team role, CSM is a reasonable entry point. If you are moving from running ceremonies to developing people and teams, ICP-ACC is the credential built for that move, and it never needs renewing. Many of our ICP-ACC participants are CSM holders taking the next step.
Can I take ICP-ACC without holding CSM?
Yes. CSM is not a prerequisite. ICP-ACC providers typically expect familiarity with agile ways of working and some team experience, which many people have without any prior certification.
Does ICP-ACC expire like CSM does?
No. ICP-ACC is a lifetime ICAgile credential with no renewal fees or continuing education requirements. CSM renews on a two-year cycle with a fee.
Which is better for an agile coach career?
ICP-ACC, because it certifies coaching competency rather than framework knowledge, and it is the first of the two certifications on the ICAgile Agile Coaching track that leads toward the ICE-AC expert credential.
