ICP-FAI vs CSPO: which actually fits product roles in Singapore and Malaysia?

This page is for Product Owners, Product Managers, and Business Analysts in SG and MY choosing between an AI-focused product credential and a Scrum-aligned PO credential. You will learn what each really teaches, where each is recognized, and the honest path most people should take.

TL;DR: the honest answer

  • CSPO is the standard PO credential. If your role title is Product Owner inside a Scrum-running organization, CSPO is the most-named credential in hiring briefs across SG and MY.
  • ICP-FAI is the AI literacy layer for product people. It covers AI foundations, ethics, governance, and prompts the PO mindset to consider AI feature design. It is not a replacement for CSPO.
  • If you have neither, do CSPO first. The PO craft is the foundation. AI literacy on top of the craft is the differentiated profile.
  • If you already have CSPO and you ship AI features, add ICP-FAI. The combination is what 2026 hiring briefs are starting to ask for at financial services and consumer tech firms.
  • Neither one alone makes you a senior PO. Both are foundational. Senior practice is built on shipped products, not credentials.
  • ICP-FAI is lifetime. CSPO requires renewal every two years.

ICP-FAI explained: AI literacy for the product mindset

ICP-FAI is an ICAgile foundational certification in Foundations of AI. The learning outcomes cover what AI actually is and is not, the distinction between traditional ML and generative AI, model selection mental models, evaluation thinking, AI ethics (bias, fairness, transparency), AI governance frames including ISO 42001 and the MAS FEAT principles, the EU AI Act outline, and the implications for product design including prompt design awareness and human-AI interaction patterns.

Importantly, ICP-FAI is not a Product Owner certification in the Scrum sense. It does not teach the PO accountabilities, the product backlog, or sprint goals. It teaches a product-aware professional to think clearly about AI. The intended audience is broader than POs and includes PMs, BAs, designers, change leaders, and L&D leads. Many participants take it specifically because their team is starting to ship AI features and they need a shared vocabulary with engineering.

Genuine strengths. Strong on ethics and governance, which most AI courses gloss over. Vendor-neutral, so it does not lock the participant into one model provider. Lifetime certification. ICAgile competency-based assessment means the credential is signed off by an instructor, not by a multiple-choice exam.

Honest weaknesses. It is foundational, not advanced. ICP-FAI does not teach LLM application architecture, RAG patterns, or eval harness design at the depth a senior AI PM would want. For that, additional courses (AI Product Management, AI engineering for PMs) are needed. ICP-FAI alone is the literacy floor, not the ceiling.

SG/MY recognition. ICP-FAI is rising in SG hiring briefs for AI product roles, especially in financial services and digital natives. In MY, HRD Corp-funded transformation programmes increasingly include ICP-FAI as a baseline AI literacy module. It is becoming a "must have on the CV" credential for product professionals shipping AI features, the way CSM became standard for Scrum Masters in the 2010s.

CSPO explained: the standard Product Owner credential

CSPO (Certified Scrum Product Owner) is the Scrum Alliance entry credential for the Product Owner accountability. The course is two days, delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST), and covers the PO role inside Scrum, product vision, backlog management, value delivery, and stakeholder collaboration. There is an online assessment after the course. The credential is valid for two years and requires SEUs and a renewal fee.

CSPO is the most-named PO credential in SG and MY hiring briefs. It is well understood by hiring managers, HR systems, and L&D buyers. Most large enterprises have multiple CSTs on their preferred trainer panel and can fund a CSPO cohort without procurement friction.

Genuine strengths. Strong brand recognition. Clear progression path to A-CSPO and CSP-PO inside Scrum Alliance. Solid foundational content on the PO accountability, backlog craft, and product vision. Community network through Scrum Alliance is real.

Honest weaknesses. CSPO is Scrum-centric. It does not cover AI product literacy. It does not cover Lean Product, Continuous Discovery, or modern product management practice in depth. Two-year renewal is real recurring cost. The content has not evolved much in the last five years, which is appropriate for a foundational credential but means it does not address what is changing in product practice.

SG/MY recognition. Extremely strong. CSPO is on most enterprise PO career frameworks in SG banks, MY GLCs, and regional tech firms. For a PO role title, CSPO is the default ask.

The honest decision framework

1. What is your current role title? Product Owner inside Scrum: CSPO first. Product Manager not in Scrum: ICP-FAI is more directly useful. Business Analyst moving into product: CSPO if the org is Scrum, ICP-FAI if the work is AI-heavy.

2. Do you ship AI features? Yes: ICP-FAI is the more immediately useful upskill. No: CSPO is the more durable baseline.

3. Do you already have CSPO or equivalent? Yes: add ICP-FAI. The combination is becoming the 2026 sweet spot. No: do CSPO first.

4. What does your hiring brief look like? Read three recent JDs for the role you want. If they ask for AI literacy, ICP-FAI is on the path. If they ask for Scrum PO experience, CSPO is on the path. Both usually show up at the senior end.

5. Self-funded or corporate-funded? Self-funded: CSPO has slightly stronger CV recognition per dollar spent today. ICP-FAI is the rising signal. Corporate-funded: ask for both across a 12 month L&D plan. Most L&D budgets can carry both with HRD Corp or SkillsFuture support.

Common mistakes when choosing

1. Treating ICP-FAI as a PO credential. It is not. It is an AI literacy credential. The two are complementary, not substitutes.

2. Doing ICP-FAI without any PO craft. A professional who can speak about AI but cannot run a product backlog is not a credible PO. The order matters.

3. Skipping CSPO because PSPO I is cheaper. Both work. The question is what the hiring brief asks for. In SG and MY, CSPO appears more often.

4. Buying an AI literacy course that does not address ethics and governance. Any AI literacy course for regulated-sector roles must address MAS FEAT principles, ISO 42001, and EU AI Act implications. If the curriculum is silent on these, it is incomplete.

5. Funding the credential and not shipping a product. The credential is the start line. Shipped product is the proof. Do not delay the next product release while waiting for the next credential.

Where Agile Visa fits

Agile Visa delivers ICP-FAI as an ICAgile Member Organization with founder Prashant Shinde as the lead instructor. We run ICP-FAI as a vendor-neutral foundational AI literacy course aligned to ICAgile learning outcomes, with strong emphasis on SG and MY regulatory context (MAS FEAT, BNM RMiT, PDPA, MY National AI Roadmap). We have trained 75,000+ professionals across 140+ countries across our wider portfolio, with cohorts since 2017.

We do not deliver CSPO. CSPO is a Scrum Alliance credential and Scrum Alliance lists CSTs on scrumalliance.org. If CSPO is the right starting credential for your situation, we will say so plainly. The pattern we recommend most often for working POs in 2026 is CSPO from a respected CST first, then ICP-FAI from us six to twelve months later, then continued AI product practice through shipped features.

FAQ

Is ICP-FAI a substitute for CSPO?

No. ICP-FAI is an AI literacy credential. CSPO is a Product Owner accountability credential. They are complementary.

Which one should I do first?

If you have neither and your role is Product Owner, do CSPO first. If your role is broader (PM, BA) and your team ships AI, ICP-FAI is more immediately useful.

Does ICP-FAI cover prompt engineering?

It covers prompt awareness as part of product design thinking. It is not a deep prompt engineering course. For deep prompt craft, a dedicated technical course is the better fit.

How long is each course?

Both are two days. ICP-FAI can be delivered in a four half-day online format. CSPO is typically two consecutive days.

Will employers in Singapore banks accept ICP-FAI?

Yes for AI literacy signal. For a PO role title at a bank, employers typically also expect CSPO or equivalent.

Is funding available for either course in MY?

HRD Corp SBL-Khas is available for accredited courses. Eligibility is per-course and depends on the provider's HRD Corp registration. Check directly with the provider.

Does CSPO cover AI?

Not specifically. CSPO is Scrum-centric. AI literacy is best built through ICP-FAI or a dedicated AI Product course.

Will ICP-FAI become outdated quickly?

The principles and ethics content is durable. The tooling context will move. ICAgile updates the learning outcomes periodically, but the participant should expect to refresh tooling knowledge separately.
